Sir Keir Starmer will be making history as the first British prime minister to visit the Republic of Ireland in five years, as Downing Street heralds a “new era of co-operation and friendship” between the two countries. Prime Minister Sir Keir will meet Taoiseach Simon Harris, who was also recently elected and both are new to their respective roles. They will have a full day of engagement in the Irish capital, Dublin, which will culminate in the Republic of Ireland versus England soccer game at the Aviva Stadium.
The visit to Ireland comes just after Sir Keir’s trip to Berlin and Paris, as part of his plan to reset the UK’s relations with its key European partners. Speaking ahead of his visit, the British Prime Minister said that the UK and Ireland have a strong connection, due to shared geography, a common culture, and the friendship of the people. He further explained that their relationship was yet to reach its full potential, and that he wanted to change that. The intention was to deepen their collaboration for the benefit of the people of both countries.
Moreover, Sir Keir’s visit to Ireland is seen as an opportunity to encourage more significant bilateral trade and investment, in the interest of expansion. The last British prime ministerial visit to the Republic of Ireland was by Boris Johnson in 2019. While under the Conservative government, the relationship between the United Kingdom and Ireland was said to be at its lowest point due to differences over Brexit, Sir Keir’s administration coming to power promises a new beginning. On both major issues that caused conflicts between the two countries recently, the Labour Party’s victory may herald a more positive outlook.
Finally, with the visit culminating in a sporting event, BBC’s John Coyne stated that political football is being taken to a new level. The last time an England soccer game was played in Dublin in 1995, the friendly had to be abandoned due to visiting fans’ rioting. The bar for this game is much higher, as Sir Keir Starmer and Mr Harris meet to promote goodwill between the two countries in this new era of friendship
