£19.99Paula Leeson, a millionaire who drowned in a swimming pool while holidaying with her husband Donald McPherson in Denmark in 2017, was unlawfully killed by him, a judge has ruled. McPherson was cleared of her murder in 2021, but the family of the deceased requested a judge to consider whether he had unlawfully killed her. The court found that McPherson deliberately and unlawfully killed Leeson by compressing her in an armlock and placing her in the pool. The injuries on her body were consistent with the use of force or violence.
Leeson’s family frowned that McPherson should inherit her £4.4m estate, and the court has now blocked him from doing so. Mr Justice Richard Smith, who described Leeson as “a much-loved mother, daughter and sister,” said that McPherson’s lies and dishonesty pervaded every aspect of his life. He added that “Don’s lies are accompanied by secrecy.”
The case highlights the consequences of domestic violence and the importance of speaking up against any form of abuse or violence. Domestic violence is a rising social issue that often manifests itself in different forms such as physical abuse, stalking, economic deprivation, and emotional abuse. It frequently leads to death, injury or long-term trauma affecting both the victim and family members. However, thankfully justice has been done in the sense that McPherson was blocked from benefiting from his criminal act.
McPherson’s conviction shows the significance of taking domestic violence seriously and the need for better policies, resources, and support services for victims. Support services and legal protections provided by the government can significantly help prevent domestic abuse and offer survivors opportunities to access justice and protection that they would otherwise not have. Bringing such cases to full resolution helps serve justice for all and can be an essential deterrent to those who might exploit power dynamics, abuse and violate the trust of their loved ones
