Following a report that was just released, it has been concluded that the reason 72 people lost their lives in the tragic Grenfell Tower fire is due to the dishonesty of companies, lack of action by the fire service, and negligence by multiple governments. PM Sir Keir Starmer made a statement in which he pledged that efforts would be made to prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future and offered an apology to the victims of Grenfell.
It’s been a long-standing investigation into the incident that occurred four years ago, in which a fire engulfed the Grenfell Tower, a 24-story residential high-rise building in London. It has now been proven that the severity of the fire was due to a wide range of issues. The companies responsible for the design and maintenance of the building were found to practice dishonest and negligent behavior, cutting corners to save money, leading to poorly constructed doors, windows, and other life-saving measures that failed to perform their intended functions.
The report also highlighted the culpability of successive governments who ignored the building safety concerns and the need for an overhaul of the fire safety regulations within it. The fire service has been criticized for their lack of knowledge and expertise within high-rise buildings and an inadequate response to the severity of the fire. The combination of these failures meant that the victims of the Grenfell fire had no escape from the firefighters and no rescue in sight.
It has been announced that by the end of 2022, prosecutors will decide on any potential charges towards the individuals or parties responsible. The hope is that this report will be a necessary wake-up call to ensure that something like the Grenfell Tower fire never happens again, not just in London but worldwide
