Leicester: Children held over fatal park attack on dog walker, 80


An elderly man was attacked in a park and passed away in hospital, which has led to the arrest of five children aged between 12 and 14 on suspicion of murder. The incident occurred on Sunday evening in Franklin Park, located in Braunstone Town, Leicester. The authorities have not released the identity of the victim. However, police investigations have led to the arrests of two girls, both aged 12, two boys, 14 and 12, and a 14-year-old girl.

According to Leicestershire Police, the man was taking his dog for a walk at the Bramble Way entrance of the park when he was viciously attacked by a group of young individuals. Emergency services were notified immediately, but the perpetrators fled the scene before their arrival. Following inquiries, the authorities detained the identified five young persons and appealed for witnesses to come forward with information.

Investigators have also been in contact with individuals living in the vicinity of Franklin Park and have urged anyone who was present at the crime scene on Sunday evening to share any accounts they had relevant to the case. To investigate the incident thoroughly and understand every detail, officers have maintained a crime scene preservation plan in the park. Furthermore, Leicestershire Police plan to make a referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) related to prior police contact with the victim.

Detective inspector Emma Matts appealed for the public’s help in a statement, stating, “Officer’s are continuing to work at speed to establish the details of the attack, and we have made a number of arrests as we continue to understand what has happened. A scene preservation will remain in place at the park while our investigation progresses. Local officers are also in the area carrying out reassurance patrols and can speak to anyone in the local community who has concerns.
