An inquest has heard that a guest on The Jeremy Kyle Show who died by suicide took an overdose after host Jeremy Kyle egged on the studio audience to boo him. Steve Dymond, 63, was found dead seven days after appearing on the show. He had taken a lie detector test after being accused of infidelity by his ex-partner, Jane Callaghan.
Giving evidence, Dymond’s son Carl Woolley said that his father had called him up to six times a day following the recording. Woolley added that Jeremy Kyle had “got the crowd to egg on, to boo” his father. Dymond felt he had been “cast as the liar”. Woolley said he had encouraged his father to continue receiving ITV aftercare support from show counsellors.
The inquest, held in Winchester, heard a pen portrait of Stephen Dymond by his brother Leslie, who described him as a “dedicated” RNLI crew member who participated in rescues at sea. Dymond’s death was caused by a morphine overdose and a heart problem.
The Jeremy Kyle Show was taken off air by ITV in May 2019 after Dymond’s death. The UK parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee subsequently conducted an inquiry into reality TV and concluded that Dymond had been “exploited” by the show. The inquiry called for more support for programme participants and increased independent oversight for TV production companies
