The BBC has announced that filming for the final episode of the popular comedy series Gavin and Stacey has begun in Barry. The announcement was made through an image of the clapperboard from the first day of filming, which was shared on the BBC’s Instagram account.
Gavin and Stacey, which follows the lives of its central characters played by Mathew Horne and Joanna Page as they navigate a long-distance relationship between Essex and South Wales, originally aired for three series between 2007 and 2010. It returned for a Christmas special in 2019 that ended on a cliffhanger, with the character Nessa, played by co-creator Ruth Jones, proposing to James Corden’s character Smithy.
The festive episode attracted an average audience of 11.6 million viewers, making it the biggest festive special since 2008. Co-creators James Corden and Ruth Jones announced in May that the show would be returning for one last episode, to air on Christmas Day.
Many of the scenes in the show, including those set in Essex, were actually filmed in and around Barry, Vale of Glamorgan. Over the weekend, Jones was spotted at Marco’s café, which is known for its appearance in the show as the café where Stacey worked. Meanwhile, Welsh actor Rob Brydon, who plays Uncle Bryn in the show, posted a picture of himself with Ruth Jones on Instagram, with the caption “something’s occurring…”
