Sol Bamba: Football world pays tribute to 'great man'

Sol Bamba, the former defender for clubs including Cardiff City, Leeds United, and Hibernian, has passed away at the age of 39. Bamba had overcome non-Hodgkin lymphoma earlier in 2021 but died on Saturday in Turkey, where he was employed by Adanaspor, following a hospital admission. During his career, Bamba won promotion with Cardiff City in the 2017-2018 season and played for other clubs such as Leicester City and Middlesbrough.

Former teammates, clubs, and fans of Bamba have expressed their condolences. Mark Hudson, ex-Cardiff defender, and manager who did not have the chance to see what a “great man and leader” Bamba was, expressed devastation for the player’s family. Cyrus Christie, former Middlesbrough defender, was in disbelief about Bamba’s passing, stating that it had shaken him to the core. He finished off his tribute by saying that Bamba was one of the “nicest and most humble guys to grace this game.” Junior Hoilett, who won promotion with Cardiff alongside Bamba, expressed his love and mourning for his “Big Bro.”

Numerous other former teammates and football clubs, including Cardiff City and Leeds United, have paid their tributes to Bamba. Football Association of Wales said that it was devastated to hear of his passing and his “positivity and love for the game” were adored by everyone he worked with.

Bamba’s wife Chloe also released a statement describing how difficult it had been these past few years and how she had watched Bamba fight his cancer “with an astounding mental and physical strength and stoicism.” However, she mentioned how it had never been a fair fight, and Bamba finally succumbed to the disease. Chloe also expressed how much she and Sol had learned from each other and how Sol was her hero.

The football community will miss Sol Bamba, but his legacy and contributions to the sport will be remembered for years to come
