Former Leeds United, Leicester City, Cardiff City and Hibernian defender Sol Bamba has died at the age of 39. Bamba began his career with Paris St-Germain before playing for Dunfermline and Middlesbrough. The Ivory Coast international had been working at Turkish club Adanaspor after overcoming non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2021 during his playing days at Cardiff. Adanaspor announced the news on Saturday night and expressed their condolences to his family and community.
Leeds United, who Bamba captained from 2015 to 2016, also paid tribute to the late defender. The club is “devastated to learn of the news that former captain Sol Bamba has passed away,” adding that he will be forever in their hearts. Bamba also played for Leicester under Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2011, whom he described as the “best coach” he has ever had in a social media tribute following the Swede’s death earlier this week.
Perhaps Bamba’s biggest mark was made at Cardiff, where Neil Warnock signed him on a free in 2016. Bamba became a fan favorite and led the club to the Premier League during the 2017/18 season. He later made his Premier League debut with Cardiff in which he scored four goals. In January 2021, the club announced that Bamba was being treated for cancer. However, he returned to playing four months later after completing chemotherapy treatments.
Bamba joined Leeds United after spells with Trabzonspor in Turkey and Palermo in Italy. He leaves behind a legacy on the pitch at the clubs he played for and will be remembered for his impact on the world of football
