BBC Radio producer and co-creator of the PopMaster quiz, Phil Swern, has passed away age 76. The news was announced on the official PopMaster Twitter account with the message “Sadly today, we said goodbye to Phil Swern, the Collector, for many years the driving force behind PopMaster’s content”.
Swern produced several radio shows for both BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2 during his career. His passing was mourned by several well-known radio presenters, including Tony Blackburn and Ken Bruce. Blackburn paid tribute to his “dear friend” of 60 years, stating that Swern was “very respected in the music business for his music knowledge and professionalism, but above all he was a lovely kind and funny man”. Bruce called it the “saddest of days” and described Swern as a “brilliantly inventive man with a passion for music”.
Swern had a lifelong love of music and amassed a vast record collection, earning him the nickname “The Collector”. He explained in a 2015 interview with the BBC how his love for records began in his childhood, when his parents would take him to record stores every Saturday. Swern was known for his involvement in PopMaster, a popular quiz segment on Bruce’s show, and was responsible for devising many of the questions.
The news of Swern’s passing was met with an outpouring of grief from fans, colleagues and friends on social media, with many describing him as a “genuinely lovely person” and a “true music aficionado”. Swern’s wife, Lynsey, was by his side when he passed away after a long illness. Despite his passing, Swern’s legacy will live on through his contributions to the world of radio, music and quiz creation
