A light aircraft has crashed on an industrial estate in Derbyshire this morning. Emergency responders arrived on the scene shortly after 9am to find a two-seater Evektor SportStar plane had come down near Dunston Industrial Estate, Chesterfield. Firefighters from several surrounding areas, Derbyshire police and East Midlands Ambulance Service attended. Roads in the immediate vicinity were closed and the general public asked to avoid the area while the emergency response was underway.
The aircraft had reportedly taken off from Coal Aston airfield, near Dronfield. Eyewitnesses to the incident included one BBC reporter, Oli Constable, who provided an account of the crash. Mr Constable described police officers and other emergency workers cordoning off the site and taking steps to keep members of the public, who gathered nearby, out of harm’s way. While the downed aircraft could not be seen from the road, “lots of police officers” were working to secure the area.
At 11:30 BST, the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service announced that they had finished working at the scene and had handed over to the police. The police later acknowledged that roads in the immediate area would remain closed while the incident is investigated.
The manufacturer of the downed sport aeroplane said that such models are typically used by flight schools. Flightradar24, a website which tracks flight data, indicated that the aircraft took off from an airfield near the crash site. According to the website, the light aeroplane was a two-seater Evektor SportStar. Investigations into the cause of the accident will continue
