Sepultura vocalist, Derrick Green, recently reflected on the sudden departure of longtime drummer, Eloy Casagrande, stating that it left him “in shock”. The news broke this February, shortly before the group kicked off their farewell tour, ‘Celebrating Life Through Death’ and fans were stunned. It was later confirmed that Casagrande had joined Slipknot, after Jay Weinberg unexpectedly left the band.

Green spoke to the One Life One Chance With Toby Morse podcast and recalled the moment he found out his drummer was leaving, stating that he was “flying out literally the next day to start rehearsals”. The singer said he was “falling in a black hole” when guitarist Andreas Kisser told him. “It was totally surreal….I was just trying to get my breath…He explained everything”. Casagrande reportedly announced he was “doing this gig” and “out”, leaving Green shocked and confused.

After the sudden departure, the band quickly hired Suicidal Tendencies’ drummer Greyson Nekrutman, who later joined their line-up for the farewell tour. Sepultura has continued their tour, currently with three dates throughout Brazil in September, before kicking off the European leg in Paris on October 30. The band is set to play shows into late November in Manchester, London, Glasgow, and Dublin.

When he opened up about his decision to leave Sepultura, Casagrande said it was the farewell tour which led him to accept the Slipknot offer. “The band was going to break up and I didn’t want to stop playing drums at the age of 33…It was complicated”, he explained. The drummer made his debut with the Corey Taylor-led band during an intimate club show in California in April.

Founding Slipknot percussionist, Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan recently told NME, that the band is “going back to basics” this year to celebrate their 25th anniversary. He revealed they were “ready to kick everybody in the face again” and forgoing their usual touring schedule. Furthermore, speaking of what’s in store for 2024, Crahan said: “I’m ready to move on from what has been and move onto a world that I know needs to be.”
