In April, Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Ammanford made headlines when a 14-year-old student went on a stabbing rampage that left three people injured. The student, who cannot be named because of her age, has since admitted to three counts of wounding with intent and of being in possession of a bladed article on school premises. However, she denies three counts of attempted murder.
Among the victims were teachers Fiona Elias and Liz Hopkin, as well as another unnamed student. All three required medical attention for their injuries, while pupils were kept in lockdown for four hours until police concluded their investigations. The incident was also captured on CCTV.
On Monday, the student appeared before Swansea Crown Court, where she entered her guilty plea while also insisting she did not attempt to murder anyone. Her trial has been scheduled for 30th September. Until then, she will remain in secure youth detention accommodation.
Despite the severity of this crime, school staff and district leaders have been praised for their response to the emergency. In addition to cooperating with investigations, the school has bolstered its security measures and provided mental health resources for students and staff who may have been impacted by the event
