Over 130 young sailors will race across the English Channel from Guernsey to Dorset as part of celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of the RNLI. The Association of Sail Training Organisations (ASTO) will organise the race, which is expected to take two days to complete. The sailors will begin the race at 2 pm on Tuesday from St. Peter Port to Poole in Dorset.
All participating boats are from ASTO’s sail training programme. At least half the crew on each boat will be aged 25 or under, organisers said. The programme offers young people a chance to learn sailing skills and team-building skills.
“This race was inspired by the RNLI’s 200th anniversary with the aim of raising awareness of the impact on, and value to, young people of sail training and adventure afloat generally,” said Kerry McMillan, ASTO’s chief executive. She emphasised that the race would showcase the importance of sail training and adventure on young people.
The ASTO is a group of sailing charities, and the race has been organised by the group. The event marks the bicentenary of the RNLI and is expected to boost the awareness of the impact of sail training programmes on young people. The race is expected to be a hit with both sailors and enthusiasts of the sport
