On Saturday evening, trouble broke out in Londonderry, resulting in ten police officers being injured and one person being arrested, as reported by the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Nationalist youths hurled petrol bombs, fireworks, and stones at police lines in Nailors Row. This unrest occurred following a significant police operation around the annual Apprentice Boys Relief of Derry parade, which proceeded without incident.
Community representatives collaborated with the PSNI to avoid the situation escalating, and the PSNI requested parents and guardians to take their children home to prevent any further danger to residents in the area.
The scenes were described as ‘disgusting’ by William Calderwood, Derry City & Strabane Superintendent, who stated that such violence is entirely unacceptable and results in officers being injured.
There were approximately 50 young individuals involved, with several residents on Bishop Street being forced to leave their homes. Furthermore, whilst a fire was ignited, details are still not clear.
