After Lily Allen recently referred to James Corden as a “beg friend” on one of her BBC podcasts, the Late Late Show host has reportedly responded. The exchange took place when a fan asked Allen on her show, Miss Me?, whether she or co-host Miquita Oliver had any “surprise beg friends” who were famous. Allen replied that Corden was a “bit of a beg friend” who had been “very flirtatious” when on her chat show, albeit they had subsequently drifted apart. Corden wasn’t thrilled by Allen’s comments, according to the Daily Mail, with sources claiming he viewed them as “tacky” and her as a “twat” for making them. The TV host is yet to make an official response.

Gavin & Stacey, the BBC sitcom created by Corden and Ruth Jones that wrapped up in 2019, is due to return for a one-off special this Christmas. The original show, which ran for three series from 2007 to 2010, has remained popular on streaming services and in reruns. The 2019 Christmas special broke audience records, and will be followed by this year’s concluding episode, which fans hope will reveal whether Smithy, played by Corden, accepts Nessa’s (Jones) hand in marriage.

The idea that someone might be a “beg friend” is not unusual. It refers to those who try too hard to make friends with someone famous or important, often in a desperate and obvious way. Corden’s reputation as a social butterfly precedes him and Allen’s comments were light-hearted, but the reaction from the Late Late Show host is reportedly indicative of a wider struggle with criticism. Given the success of Gavin & Stacey, however, Corden’s stock remains high – and Smithy’s fate remains a mystery until Christmas Day
