An unconventional cycling event known as the Beachy Head World Championship Penny Farthing Hill Climb Time Trial is set to take place for the seventh year in a row. The uphill penny farthing race is organized in East Sussex and is deemed as the only such race in the world specifically designated for penny farthings. The race will commence on Sunday morning as riders are poised to face the three-mile climb to Beachy Head. The Western Lawns, Eastbourne is the location for the starting point while riders will commence the race at one-minute intervals from 10:00 BST.
The race, which involves an elevation gain of 150m (492ft), is held on an open road course. The event is open to anyone with a traditional or modern penny farthing having a wheel diameter greater than 116cm (46 inches) provided they have registered for the time trial. Approximately 25 to 30 riders are anticipated to participate, and the quickest riders will likely take a little above 13 minutes to attain the finish line at Beachy Head.
Visit Eastbourne has backed the event from its inception and has subsequently described the time trial as the only cycling event of its kind worldwide for penny farthings. A spokesperson for Visit Eastbourne has urged people to attend the event as it is free for everyone and offers a chance to see the riders in action, encouraging the crowds to cheer them from along the course.
Although the event is an amateur affair, it has attracted a considerable following and enthusiasts not just from Eastbourne but from across the UK and the world at large. Attendees are reminded to follow all Covid-19 protocols to ensure social distancing while watching the event
