London-based experimental art-rock band Black Midi have come to an “indefinite” end, according to lead singer Geordie Greep. During an Instagram live on August 10th, Greep responded to fans asking about the release of a new album by typing “no more black midi” and “it’s over”. Bassist Cameron Picton later confirmed the news on Twitter, stating “We’d agreed not to say anything about ‘breaking up’ so I was as blindsided as everyone else last night but maybe in a different way.”

The announcement was a surprise to fans, who have taken to social media to express their sadness over the news. One fan lamented that they would never be able to see the band live, while others expressed disbelief and hope that it was just a temporary break up.

Black Midi formed in 2017 and quickly gained acclaim for their unique sound. They released their debut album, Schlagenheim, in 2019, followed by Cavalcade in 2021, and Hellfire in 2022. The latter received a four-star review from NME, which described the band as a “very special group of alchemists”, delivering “more musical thrills and about-turns per minute than few other records we’ve heard this year”.

Along with their studio albums, Black Midi also released a jam and spoken word album entitled ‘The Black Midi Anthology Vol. 1: Tales of Suspense and Revenge’ on Bandcamp. Last year, the band played a special festival appearance where they covered tracks by The Beatles at Le Guess Who? in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

While the news of the band’s end may come as a disappointment to fans, Picton has confirmed that he will be working on his own music, saying “Starting sessions for my own record soon, looking forward – should be good, hopefully great!” It remains to be seen what the other members of the band will go on to do
