Commenting on the Kendrick-Drake beef, André 3000 expressed his sadness in a recent interview with Crack Magazine, stating that he feels that there is more at stake now than in the past. He highlighted the fact that in modern rap battles, there are people with empires and livelihoods that could be jeopardized. He added, “If you don’t have anything to lose, sure, go for it. But if I already made it, I’m not sure it’s even worth it anymore.”
He’s not the only notable artist to weigh in on the rivalry between the two rappers; others have shared their suspicions as well. In addition, last month André gave his thoughts on modern rappers, believing that a lot of today’s stars sound the same and lack the time to cultivate their own unique identities. Furthermore, he shared his thoughts on why he stopped rapping.
In the same interview, he said it felt “inauthentic” for him to return to rapping in favor of his new jazz direction. “If it’s in you, you should rap until you die,” he explained. “[But] if I can’t say [what I have to] in a fresh innovative way, like I’m hanging on to an old flow that I used to do, it’s not enough for me.”
The legendary artist, who last year took a left turn with his instrumental jazz flute album New Blue Sun, is set to play two intimate shows at London’s Jazz Cafe on August 16, ahead of his appearance at All Points East the following day. The shows have been called ‘New Blue Sun Live In Concert.’ He will follow the UK shows with a North American tour later in the year. Tickets for the North American tour can be found here
