Welcome to Wrexham star Arthur Massey dies aged 100

Arthur Massey, the oldest fan of Wrexham AFC, has passed away at the age of 100. Massey appeared on series three of Disney+ show Welcome to Wrexham, expressing his admiration for the football club and calling them his “idol”. He explained that he first attended a Wrexham game when he was just seven years old in 1931. Massey had been planning his hundredth birthday with his family before his death.

His daughter, Julie Birrell, announced Massey’s passing on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Alongside a photo of her father, Birrell wrote, “14/3/24 – 8/8/24. RIP Dad,” accompanied by a broken heart emoji. Wrexham AFC shared Birrell’s post and expressed their sadness, adding, “All our thoughts are with Arthur’s family and friends at this time. Forever a Wrexham supporter.”

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney, who is known for his role in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, paid tribute to Massey on social media, saying, “What a beautiful man. Thank you for sharing him with the world. Love to your entire family.” The football club was also congratulated for its promotion to League One, with Saturday marking their first game in the league.

In 2002, Massey had the opportunity to meet King Charles when he visited Wrexham’s ground with Queen Camilla to celebrate the city’s new status. Massey’s death has sparked an outpouring of condolences and tributes from fans of the Red Dragons and the wider football community
