Pikes Ibiza, a luxury hotel in the Balearic Islands, has announced that they will be putting into action a no-phone policy seven days a week following the success of their previous Monday night phone-free policy. The hotel’s management shared a message on their official Facebook page, citing that they believed it to be the beginning of a positive shift within Ibiza’s party culture. Pikes Ibiza gained notoriety for hedonism and was where the late Freddie Mercury celebrated his birthday in 1987.
The hotel is allowing guests to bring their phones; they will be placing a sticker over the phone’s camera when customers arrive. Guests are kindly asked to refrain from using their phones and the hotel staff will politely remind them if they are caught attempting to use their camera, although fellow partygoers may even assist by reminding them before the staff does.
The hotel’s ultimate objective is to encourage guests to engage fully with what is happening around them, opening up a realm of freedom and creating lasting memories. They want to give guests the opportunity to let go, sing, dance, cheer, and celebrate however they like, without any inhibitions or distractions.
Jack White banned the use of phones during his 2018 concerts, stating that “We think you’ll enjoy looking up from your gadgets for a little while and experiencing music and our shared love of it IN PERSON.” Last month, Bob Dylan implemented a similar rule during his ‘Rough And Rowdy Ways’ tour. Yondr, a company, has partnered with the musician to disallow the use of video cameras and mobile phones at his shows, making the experience entirely unique.
