£25.49Jermaine Grant, a British terrorist suspect, has been deported from Kenya after serving a long prison sentence there. He was arrested in London on Thursday after returning from Nairobi. Grant was imprisoned for possession of bomb-making equipment found in his flat in Mombasa in 2011. The flat was shared with Samantha Lewthwaite, who is wanted in connection with London’s 7/7 bombings and earned the nickname “White Widow”.
Kenyan police once accused Grant of plotting to bomb tourist hotels on the country’s coast, but he was acquitted of the conspiracy charge in 2019, only to be convicted of possessing explosive materials. The Metropolitan Police of the UK confirmed that Grant had been detained under the Terrorism Act upon his arrival from Kenya. Not only was he suspected of being part of the Islamist militant group al-Shabab, but his license conditions had been forfeited back in 2005 after a former breach of his parole conditions following a previous conviction.
Ms Lewthwaite remains at large and wanted by both the UK and Kenyan police. The Muslim convert became known as the “White Widow” after marrying London suicide bomber Germaine Lindsay. She is one of the most wanted people in Kenya and is believed to have connections to al-Shabab and several insurgent attacks. After meeting Richard Reid, known as the “shoe bomber,” while the two were in prison, Grant is understood to have become radicalized. Reid was convicted of attempting to blow up a transatlantic flight with a shoe bomb and is serving a life sentence in the United States.
