Actress Jenna Ortega recently discussed the nuances of Hollywood and politics, touching upon the idea that being “politically correct” can sometimes lack honesty. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Ortega, who stars in the upcoming show Wednesday, also spoke about her fellow Scream VI co-star, Melissa Barrera, who was terminated from the franchise due to social media posts in support of Palestine.
Ortega believes that the entertainment industry can be too sensitive, focused on political correctness at the expense of honesty and humanity. The actress mused that if people were allowed to speak freely without fear of judgment, discussions might be more productive, stating, “Imagine if everyone could say what they felt and not be judged for it and, if anything, it sparked some sort of debate, not an argument. Am I describing world peace?”
In November 2021, Barrera was relinquished from her role as Sam Carpenter in the Scream franchise after her social media posts appeared to be perceived as anti-Semitic. Spyglass Media, the film’s production company, did not tolerate anti-Semitic and hate speech of any kind. Ortega departed from the franchise a day after Barrera, citing scheduling conflicts. In the aftermath of their departures, the original Scream star, Neve Campbell, announced her return to the franchise.
Ortega is set to star in the sequel to the 1988 Tim Burton classic, Beetlejuice, alongside Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder. The film is slated for release on September 6. Ortega recently spoke about the Denzel Washington film that changed the course of her existence, and season two of her show Wednesday is currently in production and expected to be released by Netflix in late 2024 or early 2025
