Football legend Ian Wright reveals how he became friends with Mick Jagger

Ian Wright recently detailed his unlikely friendship with Mick Jagger, the Rolling Stones frontman. During a special pre-season edition of the Stick to Football podcast, Wright was joined by several football icons, including Wayne Rooney, Jill Scott, Roy Keane, and Gary Neville. When asked about whom he would swap lives with for a day, Wright mentioned Jagger and explained how their friendship blossomed.

Wright revealed that while he was on a motorbike trip to Barcelona, Jagger was staying next door. Jagger then paid them a visit and even invited them to his concert. This encounter helped forge the friendship between the two – one that has continued to thrive.

During the podcast appearance, Wright shared an anecdote about how he first spoke with his rock star friend during the 1998 World Cup. Following an injury, someone purporting to represent Jagger called him and requested a chat between the two for a French television company. Initially, Wright thought it was a joke, but he soon found out that it was genuine.

Wright fondly reminisced how he had told Jagger, who later called him, to say that he was excited about Michael Owen’s inclusion in the team. Wright’s remarks, in turn, were relayed to the French television company. Wright’s chat with Jagger had organized it all.

While Wright acknowledged that Jagger’s life has been incredible, he also expressed deep admiration for the singer’s ability to continue making fantastic music. Wright said that Jagger is someone who continues to inspire him.

Elsewhere, in an interview with NME, PR guru Alan Edwards discussed how he was mentored by Jagger. According to Edwards, the rock icon flew him to New York, where he went through stringent interviews to work with the Stones. During the interview process, Jagger asked Edwards a series of complicated questions, including which Italian newspaper was the most prominent.
