Billy Joel in Cardiff: Singer to perform only European gig for sell-out crowd

Popular American singer-songwriter Billy Joel is set to perform in front of a sell-out crowd in Cardiff for the first time ever on Friday. The Principality Stadium gig is Joel’s only performance in Europe this year. The venue is expecting an audience of over 70,000 fans and a full city centre road closure has been planned.

Billy Joel is an iconic artist known for hit tracks including Piano Man, Uptown Girl, and We Didn’t Start the Fire. Speaking to Zoe Ball on BBC Radio 2 last year, the 75-year-old said he had no plans to stop performing. “I’m the least glamorous pop star there is,” he said. “I mean I just sit at the piano and play the piano. I’m in my 70s, I’m not a matinee idol. So why are you coming to see me in the first place? But it all has to do with the music.”

Joel’s gig follows a string of recent performances by other US superstars at the Principality Stadium including Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, Pink and the Foo Fighters. Fellow US singer-songwriter Chris Isaak will be supporting Billy Joel on Friday, known for his 1989 single Wicked Game.

A number of roads will be closed throughout the city centre on Friday. From 07:00, both Scott Road and Park Street will be closed. Then, from 15:00, a full city centre closure will be in effect. Great Western Railway will be putting on extra trains to get people home from the concert in the evening. Event day parking is available between 08:00 and 00:00, offered for a fee at the civic centre. A park and ride service will operate between Leckwith and Fitzhammon Embankment, opposite the stadium
