The City of Liverpool has been inundated with help and financial support following a library fire that was started during a weekend of violence. Spellow Lane Library Hub, which opened last year to support and provide services to underprivileged communities, was badly damaged. Police reported that around three hundred people were involved in the disorder which took place near a mosque on Saturday night. Rioters tried to prevent fire crews from tending to the flames, and a number of wheelie bins were set alight, alongside shops being broken into.
Liverpool City Council has announced that thanks to the public donations of almost £200,000, and other offers of assistance, summer activities that were to be held at the library have found new locations. Newly acquired funds are earmarked for replacing destroyed books and IT equipment. Councillor Ruth Bennett said she has been “overwhelmed by the generosity of our residents, partners and people from right across the country. The thoughtfulness and generosity has been overwhelming.”
Tensions in the community had already been running high in the Liverpool region after three girls were killed in a stabbing incident at a Taylor Swift-themed dance party held in nearby Southport. Bennett went on to say, “We have now set up a dedicated email which will allow us to start the process of formally accepting donations and offers of help moving forward. On behalf of the city – thank you. It is deeply appreciated and humbling.”
Merseyside police have launched an investigation into the weekend’s events and have released a plea for anyone with any information to come forward and share what they know. The community in Liverpool and local businesses have rallied around the library and community, showing that from an act of senseless violence comes a display of generosity and goodwill.
