Green Day surprised fans at their recent show in New York by appearing on stage dressed as Marvel comic book characters Deadpool and Wolverine. The band, made up of Tre Cool, Mike Dirnt and Billie Joe Armstrong, are currently on tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of Dookie and the 20th anniversary of American Idiot. Footage emerged of Dirnt and Cool surprising Armstrong on stage at the end of the show, leading to laughter that prevented a full performance of the final song.
Green Day performed an acoustic version of “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” to close out their 37-song set. While Armstrong performed the song alone with an acoustic guitar, Dirnt and Cool dressed up backstage and appeared on stage during the last verse of the song. As the two Marvel characters appeared, Armstrong laughed so much that he couldn’t finish the performance.
The band’s tour features guest performances from Rancid, The Linda Lindas, and The Smashing Pumpkins. During the US leg of their tour, Armstrong held up a Donald Trump mask with the word “idiot” written on the forehead, replacing a line in the “American Idiot” title track to reference the former president’s MAGA agenda. The band recently completed the UK and European leg of their ‘Saviors’ stadium tour to glowing reviews, including five stars from an NME review of their show in Manchester.
Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine, the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, was released worldwide on July 26. The film has already broken the record for the highest opening weekend for an R-rated film, bringing in approximately $205 million in North America
