Actress Jenna Ortega has spoken about the controversy surrounding the three-decade age gap between her and co-star Martin Freeman in the film Miller’s Girl, which includes a sex scene. Defending the movie, which explores the relationship between an 18-year-old student and her professor, Ortega said the film was not endorsing such relationships. “It’s supposed to be awful at times. Art isn’t always meant to be pleasant or happy,” she said. Freeman also commented earlier this year, calling the movie “grown-up and nuanced”.
Miller’s Girl, which was released in the US in January, is an erotic thriller that has received backlash due to the age gap of the two actors. However, intimacy coordinator Kristina Arjona explained that Ortega was comfortable with the scenes and had been supported throughout the process. “Part of my job is supporting her decisions… I’m hyper aware of both of my talent and making sure that we’re consistently checking in and that at no point are any of their boundaries being surpassed,” she stated.
Ortega recently opened up about the Denzel Washington film that “changed the entire course of my existence”. She is also set to star in season two of Netflix’s Wednesday, which will feature new cast members Billie Piper, Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley and Thandie Newton. The second season, currently in production, is expected to be released on Netflix by late 2024 or early 2025.
