The festive period is creeping closer and Ed Sheeran is already getting into the Christmas spirit. He has written and recorded a track titled ‘Under The Tree’ for the upcoming animated movie, That Christmas. Written, produced and directed by Richard Curtis and Simon Otto respectively, the movie is set to launch on Netflix in the UK on December 6th. Alongside Sheeran’s contribution, various stars will be providing their voices for the animated flick: Jodie Whittaker, Fiona Shaw, Brian Cox and Bill Nighy.
Despite various commitments, the friendship between Sheeran and Curtis has remained strong. Their first encounter was through work for charity and they later found themselves collaborating for Yesterday. When Curtis initially played ‘That Christmas’ to Sheeran, he was touched by the emotion the sketches conjured.
The song will be a poignant addition to the movie and will likely touch the hearts of many who have experienced loss or absence during the Christmas period. Sheeran’s older brother, composer Matthew, was instrumental in creating the melody, and given his close relationship with his sibling, it was a gift to have had his participation.
That Christmas is based on a trilogy of children’s books written by Curtis himself, which is his first foray into the world of animation. The film is set in Suffolk, Sheeran’s home county, and Curtis is thrilled to have him contribute to the soundtrack. The contribution gave the creative team extra motivation to create the best experience for viewers.
Sheeran has been busy touring Europe, with his next show being at the Zagreb Hippodrome in Croatia on August 10th, bringing the show to an end at Land of Tomorrow in Larnaca, Cyprus, on September 8th. The musician is committed to spending time with his family and making music that his children can enjoy, but it appears he’s also passionate about making contributions to films that utilise his music skills
