People gathered in Merseyside to pay their respects to Alice da Silva Aguiar, a Portuguese girl who was killed during a knife attack that took place in a dance workshop in Southport last week. Alice was only nine years old when she lost her life along with two other children, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Bebe King, while attending a Taylor Swift-themed dance class. The memorial service for Alice took place on Tuesday and included hymn singing, tributes read in English and Portuguese, and the release of white balloons.
At the service, held at the St Patrick’s Church, Alice’s parents thanked the local community for their support, while her headteacher read tributes about Alice from her classmates. One of Alice’s classmates described her as an amazing, caring and confident person who was always there to help others when they needed someone. Alice’s family also read out a message which said they loved her, stating that her smile was contagious and always full of joy. One of the speakers at the service spoke on behalf of Alice’s family and told those in attendance that Alice was “the most beautiful, strongest girl in the world.”
The service was a reminder that this was a celebration of Alice’s life, despite the tragic circumstances surrounding her death. The local community, as well as Alice’s family and friends came together to show their support, with prayers also being said for Bebe and Elsie. Alice’s funeral is scheduled to be held on Sunday.
It was confirmed on Tuesday that all of the children who were treated for injuries on the Alder Hey hospital have been discharged. Alder Hey expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and well-wishes sent to them and to the families of the affected children. The 17-year-old who allegedly committed the crime, Axel Muganwa Rudakubana, has been charged with three counts of murder, 10 counts of attempted murder, and possession of a curved kitchen knife
