A tragic fire broke out in Wirral, killing an eight-year-old boy and injuring three others. The blaze started in the early hours of Sunday morning on Keele Close, according to Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS). Ground floor of the house was on fire when the crews arrived. Three people were outside, having leapt from first floor windows. Firefighters found the boy inside the building but he passed away soon after despite extensive first aid from paramedics.
Although three people are being treated in hospital, their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. MFRS and Merseyside Police are conducting a joint investigation that has established that the fire was accidental. In a statement, Chief Fire Officer Phil Garrigan said: “Our thoughts are very much with the family, friends and loved ones of the young boy at this time. This has been a very tragic incident, with an incredibly sad outcome despite the best efforts of my crews. “I would like to commend the efforts of my fire control team and fire crews who acted so quickly to rescue the young boy and North West Ambulance Service colleagues who made every effort to provide emergency resuscitation.”
This is a tragedy that no community should ever experience. Fires can occur at any time and the mere thought of losing a loved one is terrifying. It is, therefore, crucial for everyone to take the necessary steps to ensure that their homes are fireproof or as safe as possible. The smoke detector can be lifesavers in such situations. It is important for people to ensure that they check them regularly and replace batteries when needed rather than disconnecting them. By staying vigilant and taking precautions, we can all contribute to a safer community
