Violent disorder erupted outside a hotel in Tamworth, Staffordshire, on Sunday night. A group had gathered outside the Holiday Inn Express, where asylum seekers had been housed, and threw petrol bombs and fireworks at officers. One policeman suffered a broken arm. The disorder lasted over three hours, and three petrol bombs were used to start several fires.
Staffordshire Police described the attacks on the hotel and officers as “senseless violence” and “completely inexcusable”. There have been over 100 arrests nationally in connection with such riots and anti-immigration protests. Rioters were also seen smashing the windows of a Holiday Inn Express outside Rotherham before starting fires.
The police operation is ongoing to investigate the incident and identify those responsible for the violence. Police patrols are gathering evidence overnight, using drones and the National Police Air Service in the area. Footage from CCTV, air support, and body-worn video devices will also be used to identify offenders.
The local MP revealed that Holiday Inn Express had been hosting asylum seekers “for years”. IHG, the owners of the hotel brand, stated that “The safety and security of our guests and colleagues is always our priority. Any further questions should be directed to the Home Office.” The Assistant Chief Constable of Staffordshire urged anyone with information to come forward and said that the community did not deserve to be subject to such behaviour
