Keely Hodgkinson and Josh Kerr, both of Team GB, put themselves in the running for Olympic gold medals during their respective events at Stade de France. Hodgkinson, aged 22, breezed through her women’s 800m semi-final in 1 minute 56.86 seconds, qualifying fastest overall. Unfortunately, her teammates Jemma Reekie and Phoebe Gill could not qualify for the same race. However, world champion Kerr outperformed to qualify for the 1500m title showdown after following Norway’s Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen across the line in their semi-final. Ingebrigtsen won with a time of 3:32.38, with Kerr not far behind with a time of 3:32.46. Teammate Neil Gourley and American Yared Nuguse also qualified for the final, but George Mills missed out after a repechage round.
Matthew Hudson-Smith and Charlie Dobson, two more of Team GB, both managed to qualify for the men’s 400m semi-finals. Hudson-Smith, seeking gold after earning a world 400m silver medal, had a comfortable win in his heat, clocking 44.78. Dobson, who was competing in the Olympics for the first time in his career, defeated Belgium’s European champion Alexander Doom in 44.96. The final for the event will take place on Wednesday, with hopes for a strong showing from Team GB.
Unfortunately, Reekie and Gill had less luck during their performance. Gill was fourth in her 800m semi-final with a time of 1:58.47, and Reekie, who was fourth in the Olympic final in Tokyo three years ago, had a disappointing performance that landed her in fifth place in her race, with a time of 1:58.01. However, this is not the end of the Olympics for Team GB as they continue to face off against the world’s best athletes
