‘House of the Dragon’ fans “underwhelmed” at season two finale’s lack of progress

The second season finale of House of the Dragon has left some fans disappointed due to the lack of narrative progress. The episode, titled “The Queen Who Ever Was”, aired on HBO on August 4th but some scenes from it had leaked online a few days earlier. The episode saw Rhaenyra Targaryen finally reclaiming her throne, with her husband Daemon by her side.

Several show fans turned to social media after the episode aired to express their frustration. Some expressed disappointment at the climax and its lack of narrative closure. One person wrote: “We all just watched a 66 minute trailer for S3.” while another said that it was “successfully replacing GOT season 8 as the most disappointing and poorly executed seasons of television”.

Still, despite some fans’ negative reactions, HBO has already commissioned a third season of House of the Dragon. In a press release, the executive vice president of HBO Programming, Francesca Orsi, said she was “thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season three”.

Before the third season airs, another Game Of Thrones spin-off, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, is expected to premiere in “early 2025”, with production rumoured to have already started. Meanwhile, another prequel called 10,000 Ships is also in development. The show would be set 1,000 years before the events of Game Of Thrones and would follow the story of the warrior princess Nymeria. It has been through several different writers, but Pulitzer Prize–winner Eboni Booth is currently writing the pilot
