The release of Deadpool & Wolverine has brought the focus back on Chris Evans and Ryan Reynolds’ friendship. Evans made a cameo appearance in the Marvel film, playing Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch, a character he first portrayed in 2005’s Fantastic Four.

In an exclusive interview with People, Evans shared how the cameo came to happen, attributing it to his long-standing friendship with Reynolds. Reynolds texted him a couple of years ago with an idea that could give him the opportunity to revisit his past character, which Evans took up.

Evans enjoyed playing Storm again and having a monologue with expletives was the highlight for him. Reynolds was ready to provide cue cards, but Evans was entirely off-book for the scene.

Evans wasn’t the only Avengers actor to appear in the film. Chris Hemsworth, who played Thor also made a quick appearance, fuelling fan speculation about events yet to happen in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Reynolds responded to Jamie Lee Curtis’ recent apology for her criticism of Marvel with his characteristic humor, asking if everyone is expected to apologize for slamming Marvel post-Endgame
