A brass band outside the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago turned Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ into a Donald Trump diss. The performance took place on the same day that the former president was speaking at the event. Whilst Kendrick’s original lyrics say “They not like us,” the brass band replaced “they” with “Trump.” Notably, Drake recently referenced the song in response to an impersonator dancing along to ‘Hotline Bling.’
The band’s performance was filmed by multiple Twitter users, including Dana Abercrombie, a clip of which was reposted by NME. Despite the fact that the rapper has taken aim at Drake with this song, it has nevertheless been hugely successful. It reached the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and recently became the most streamed hip-hop song in one day.
Drake himself has been quoted as having said “sometimes you gotta pop out” while referencing an impersonator dancing to ‘Hotline Bling.’ A desktop and smartphone 8-bit video game has been created based on the Kendrick song, and its music video was released last month. It seems that the song, regardless of its subject matter, has resonated with audiences worldwide. The CEO of the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason Jr., has suggested the song would be eligible to be entered for a Grammy, considering Kendrick’s past success with the awards
