UK protests: Violence will be punished says Yvette Cooper

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has issued warnings that those engaging in violent disorder will be punished. This comes after a wave of demonstrations in several cities across England over the weekend, some of which saw incidents of violence. Cooper has stated that she will work alongside police forces to ensure “consequences, arrests and prosecutions” for those responsible. The events come amid heightened tensions following the killing of three young girls at a Southport dance party last week.

Cooper stated on Saturday that criminal violence has no place on Britain’s streets, and that the police have the government’s full backing in taking action against those involved. Some suspects have already been arrested and more are expected, with imprisonment and travel bans amongst the possible consequences. People have “the right to feel safe”, Cooper added. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s spokesperson also stated that the police have his full support in taking action against extremist individuals and groups.

Meanwhile, demonstrations descended into violence in several areas. In Liverpool, bricks, bottles and flares were thrown at police, with one officer hit in the head by a chair and another knocked off his motorbike. In Hull, protesters smashed a window at a hotel that has been used to house asylum seekers, while bottles and eggs were thrown at police. City Hall was placed on lockdown. In Manchester and Belfast, there were also reports of violence.

It should be noted that not all demonstrations held across the UK turned violent over the weekend. Some protesters have already dispersed, while others are scheduled to take place later on. Nonetheless, over thirty demonstrations by far-right activists have been identified around the UK, with an additional 70 prosecutors on standby to charge those arrested in connection with violent disorder. Cooper’s warnings underline concerns that tensions will continue to rise across the country and emphasise the urgent need for the UK Government to take appropriate action to restore order
