After a long-standing legal battle between businessman and founder of Space Ibiza, Pepe Roselló, and Fiesta Hotels & Resorts SL, owned by the Matutes family, Roselló’s trademark to the Space brand has been cancelled by the Valencia commercial court. The court ruled in favour of the Matutes family, as the confusion with the “Space” brand had a “nominative and graphic nature with the logo and the trademark ‘Space Ibiza Dance’, registered in 1991 and whose owner is Fiesta Hotels”. The ruling upholds the claim filed by Fiesta Hotels and annuls the registration of the trademark “Space Ibiza” that Roselló made back in 2008.

Palladium Group, the owner of Fiesta Hotels, is reportedly exploring “precautionary measures” to shut down the current Space Ibiza party held every week at Eden nightclub. The ruling is the latest development in a long-standing case between Roselló and the Matutes family, which initially began over the management of the Space nightclub, which was rented by Roselló from the Matutes family, now known as Hï Ibiza.
Roselló indicated that the ruling is only in effect within Spain and plans to appeal the ruling. According to reports, the Matutes family filed the case against Roselló after he used the name “Space Ibiza” without their consent when he opened a new nightclub in Ibiza under the same name in 2017.
The cancellation of the Space Ibiza trademark by the Valencia commercial court is a significant blow to Roselló, who has been in the entertainment industry for over four decades and has become a legend of the electronic dance music scene. Many fans and industry figures have praised Roselló for contributing to the growth of Ibiza’s reputation as a party capital and bringing electronic music to a global audience.
