Anti-fascist protesters gathered outside the Abdullah Quilliam Society mosque on West Derby Road in Liverpool on Friday night, to counter a small far-right demonstration. Merseyside and North Wales police kept the groups apart. The centre of Liverpool was closed to traffic and ten people were arrested on suspicion of public order offences. The mosque, which has links to moderate Sufi Islam, was founded in 1887 when Liverpool was one of the world’s busiest ports, serving as a key link between Europe and the British Empire.
Police were alerted to the possibility of a far-right demonstration outside the building after a flyer was circulated earlier in the week. Following riots outside a mosque in Southport on Tuesday night, in which police were targeted and a police van burned, fears were high of a violent outbreak in Liverpool.
