The Smile, consisting of Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead and Sons Of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, dropped a surprise vinyl release featuring two new tracks called ‘Don’t Get Me Started’ and ‘The Slip’. The band didn’t announce the release of the vinyl, which is currently only sold in a limited edition in-store alongside a customized XL Recordings housebag. Fans can expect online ordering to begin on August 8.
To promote the vinyl, The Smile posted vague AI imagery on its social media accounts on August 2. Meanwhile, the group announced the cancelation of its upcoming European August tour dates due to Jonny Greenwood recovering from an infection that required emergency hospital treatment, some of it in intensive care. The musicians stressed that their collective priority was to ensure Jonny’s full recovery.
Fans have given the two new songs positive feedback on social media. One Twitter user wrote: “What a lovely surprise to wake up to! Beautiful music again from The Smile!” Another praised the release, writing: “Don’t Get Me Started is like I’m listening to Idiotque for the first time again. Silent Spring vibes from The Slip, hope there’s more records.”
The Smile’s second LP, titled ‘Wall Of Eyes’, was released in early 2021 and was described by NME as consolidating the collective as “one of the finest and most inventive rock bands on the planet right now.” Thom Yorke is set to embark on a solo tour of Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Japan in October and November
