BBC removes episode of ‘Doctor Who’ featuring Huw Edwards from streaming

A 2006 episode of Doctor Who featuring former newsreader Huw Edwards has been removed from the BBC iPlayer streaming service. The episode, titled “Fear Her”, includes a scene in which David Tennant’s Doctor travels to the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony in London, with Edwards’ voice being heard commenting on the event. The move comes after Edwards pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children, admitting to possessing 41 illegal images, including seven of the most serious type.

The BBC said it was “shocked” at the news and clarified that Edwards would have been dismissed if he had been charged before leaving the corporation three months ago. Edwards could now face a prison sentence and is due to appear in court again on September 16. The broadcaster was first suspected by the BBC last July after allegations emerged of sexual misconduct. While police found no evidence of criminal conduct at that time, an investigation into the indecent images began.

In April, Edwards resigned from the BBC following “medical advice”. His wife later revealed that he had been hospitalised with “serious mental health issues”. Edwards was widely known as the BBC’s highest-paid newsreader, covering major global events such as the inauguration of Barack Obama, the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and the announcement of the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Between 1994 and 2003 he presented the BBC Six O’Clock News, which was at that time the UK’s most-watched news programme. According to the BBC, he received between £435,000 and £439,000 in the year 2022/23.

The BBC has stressed that it will not tolerate “such abhorrent behaviour” and has expressed its sympathy for those affected by Edwards’ actions
