Police have arrested six people in Southend-on-Sea in connection with a recent incident. The Essex Police detained the suspects citing ‘disorder’ as the reason for the arrest. The arrests came after David Burton-Sampson, the Labour MP for Southend West and Leigh, advised the public to stay away from the area. The police have warned that they will have a visible presence in the area over the next 48 hours.
Essex Police put a dispersal order in place on Tuesday for Southend seafront, granting its officers more authority to tackle anti-social behaviour, which will remain in force until Wednesday evening. The order applies to popular sites along Marine Parade, Pier Hill, High Street, Western Esplanade, and the two train stations in Southend. Dispersal orders for young people have been frequent in the city due to their frequent gathering on the seafront.
Daniel Cowan, Labour leader of Southend City Council, noted that there had been a significant influx of young people. He recently explained on his Facebook and X accounts, “I’m urging calm and encouraging people to avoid Jubilee Beach this evening as Essex Police deal with a large influx of young people. It’s a developing situation that CCTV and the police are monitoring, and more police resources are en route to support the dispersal order that is in place.”
Chief Supt Morgan Cronin stated that the police have received various incident reports from the public and that the information they have provided is invaluable. He added, “We will have a visible presence in Southend tonight and tomorrow; if you know something, please speak to one of our officers or contact us to help.
