The famous Bristol club and gig venue, The Crofters Rights, has announced that it will shut down for a month due to a variety of issues. The company shared a statement on its website saying the rent had been raised despite the challenges of running a live music venue. The Crofters Rights, part of Bloomsbury Leisure Group, is expected to reopen in September after addressing the issues. Other causes cited were considerably abbreviated foot traffic due to the cost of living crisis and several complaints about new flats built near the venue. The venue also needs investment repairs to its upkeep.
According to the statement, August is the best month to close temporarily, given the venue is primarily used by students and that it is traditionally quiet during the period. The move has not gone down well with numerous local bands and promoters who had shows planned at the venue next month. They claimed the sudden cancellation was “catastrophic” with one guitarist feeling “really insecure as artists”.
While The Crofters Rights will be temporarily closed, Crofters Gardens will remain open. The closure comes as many UK clubs and musical venues face the ever-increasing challenges from the high cost of living crisis threatening many entertainment venues.
Jamaal Johnson, Mixmag’s Digital Intern, commented on the announcement, stating that the closure of Crofters Rights is another sign of the crisis shadowing music and entertainment venues that are struggling to survive in modern society.
