Anjem Choudary, the leader of banned group al-Muhajiroun, has been sentenced to life in prison for directing the group and encouraging support for it through online meetings. The verdict means that Choudary will not be eligible for release on licence until he is over 85 years old. Choudary appeared shocked and unsteady in the dock when he was given a minimum term of 28 years at Woolwich Crown Court.
Choudary, one of the UK’s most notorious radicalisers, was caught after a complicated investigation by detectives and investigators in the UK, Canada and the US. He was convicted of directing a terror organisation. Choudary’s group promoted violent means to spread sharia law as widely as possible across the world.
