During her first solo set at the Newport Folk Festival, Katie Gavin of MUNA unveiled six tracks from her upcoming debut solo album, ‘What A Relief’. Among these was her new single ‘Aftertaste’ as well as ‘As Good As It Gets’, a collaboration with Mitski that Gavin revealed would feature on the album’s tracklist. A romantic tribute to simple love, the track contains the lyrics: “Want you to disappoint me / on and off until we’re old / I’m inside folding laundry / you’re outside fixing the hose.” Due to Mitski’s absence from the festival, Gavin’s bandmate Naomi McPherson joined her to sing Mitski’s verses.
Gavin recently announced that her debut solo album ‘What A Relief’ will be released on October 25 under Phoebe Bridgers’ record label, Saddest Factory Records. Pre-orders are available for the album on her website. Gavin said of the album, “This record spans a lot of my life. It’s about having a really deep desire for a deeper connection, but also encountering all of the obstacles that stood in my way to be able to achieve that, patterns of isolation or even boredom with the real work of love.” She has also announced a series of intimate live gigs across the U.S. and a show in London later this year, with a pre-sale available for those who sign up to receive the code.
Gavin’s solo album follows MUNA’s 2022 self-titled album. A four-star review by NME states, “By now, it should be clear that this lot know how to pen a whopper of a pop anthem – that remains apparent here – but more crucially ‘MUNA’ also serves as solid evidence of a band with many more chapters of evolution up their sleeves yet.” In addition, Gavin’s MUNA bandmate Naomi McPherson recently landed a role as Janis Ian in Jason Reitman’s forthcoming film SNL 1975.
Katie Gavin is scheduled to appear in a number of events promoting her new solo album. She is expected to play a series of gigs across America and one in London before the end of 2024, with further events to be announced at a later date. Tickets will go on general sale August 2nd
