In Southport, two children have been killed and nine others injured at a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga event for primary school-aged children. Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy has said that six of the nine injured children remain in a critical condition along with two adults, who were also injured in the knife attack. Following the incident, armed officers arrested a 17-year-old boy from the north Lancashire village of Banks and seized a knife. Police have said that the attack was not terror-related.
Merseyside police received a report on Monday of a stabbing in Hart Street in Southport at 11:50 BST. The North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) responded by dispatching 13 ambulances to the scene with their Hazardous Area Response Team (Hart). In total, 11 people were treated for stab injuries by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospitals including Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Aintree University Hospital, and Southport and Formby Hospital.
The incident occurred at a Taylor Swift yoga and dance event for primary school-aged children between the ages of six and 10. Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said that among the two children who died and the nine injured, two adults were also in critical condition and believed to have been injured while attempting to protect the children. The attack took place in Hope of Hart, a children’s club housed in a former warehouse building on a back street.
In response to the incident, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called it “truly awful” and extended his condolences to the victims and their families. Merseyside officials have urged members of the public not to spread false information and to avoid engaging with unconfirmed speculation
