Irish singer-songwriter Nell Mescal has responded to accusations of nepotism concerning her music career and discussed rumours surrounding her brother, actor Paul Mescal. In an interview with The Independent, she addressed the claims, stating that she was already a musician when Paul rose to fame with his role in Normal People. She added that she did not want to appear resentful of her brother’s success, explaining that “they’re seeing one person get famous and [another] person figuring out what they’re doing.”
Nell had left Ireland for London to focus on her own music career prior to Paul’s fame and had been playing shows and working on building her audience. She released her debut EP, Can I Miss It For A Minute?, in May. Nell stated that the accusations of nepotism would be more understandable if Paul was a musician, given the differences between the acting and music industries.
The singer also discussed rumours surrounding her brother, including claims that he takes his dates for a walk in the park the morning after and runs away from them. She found the rumours frustrating and was unable to respond to them directly, stating that “it makes my skin crawl” to see unfounded stories circulating.
Nell expressed her hope that her EP would stand on its own, beyond any connection to her brother. “I want to be doing this when I’m like 70, until I actually can’t do it anymore,” she added
