Kevin Smith has opened up about the final conversations he had with Shannen Doherty, who had expressed her interest in doing a Mallrats sequel. The actress, who starred in Smith’s 1995 cult film and was best known for her roles in Charmed and Beverly Hills, 90210, passed away earlier this month at the age of 53 after a nine-year battle with breast cancer. Smith recalled that his last conversations with her involved an invitation to watch the movie in their theater and discussions about a possible Mallrats sequel. According to Smith, Doherty “really wanted to do” the sequel.

While Smith has since closed the door on the possibility of a sequel after Doherty’s passing, he did suggest that a producer is keen to get “going again.” Smith did, however, say that it would be a “cool thing to do” as a tribute to Doherty. Earlier this year, Smith apologized after Doherty revealed that her film career had “died” after Mallrats. Smith had previously written a script for a follow-up movie titled Twilight of the Mallrats during lockdown in 2020.

Doherty’s publicist confirmed her death in July, stating that “the devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie.” Following her death, it was revealed that Doherty had recorded five episodes of Charmed rewatch podcast House Of Halliwell prior to her passing. Despite the loss, Doherty’s memory lives on, and the podcast hopes that the episodes offer some comfort to those who loved her.

In addition to her well-known roles on Charmed and Beverly Hills, 90210, Doherty’s legacy includes her work in Mallrats and her tenacious spirit in fighting her illness. While a Mallrats sequel may not come to fruition, the impact that Doherty had on her co-stars and fans alike will not be forgotten
