Actor Robert Downey Jr. has announced his return to the Marvel franchise as Dr. Doom, a popular villain, in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film. He surprised fans at the San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel when he removed his mask amongst a group of other hooded figures, all wearing masks of the comic book villain. Downey Jr., who previously starred as Iron Man in past Marvel films, said he loves playing complicated characters and that it’s a new mask but the same task. The Russo brothers will also direct the new movie, which does not have an official release date yet.

The Russo brothers, who also directed Avengers: Endgame, told fans at the event that they thought Endgame was the end of the line for them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but with a special story, they’ve potentially found a road forward. Downey Jr. starred in 11 Marvel films, including 2008’s Iron Man and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. The announcement of his return to the franchise as Dr. Doom has excited many Marvel fans.

In other Marvel news, Ryan Reynolds co-wrote the latest movie Deadpool & Wolverine with Hugh Jackman as the mutant X-Men figure. The film is the latest entry in Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following November’s release of The Marvels. Deadpool & Wolverine will integrate both characters into the cinematic universe. Marvel studio boss Kevin Feige also gave an update on the reboot of Blade, which is expected to come to theatres in 2025.

In an interview with BlackTree TV to promote Deadpool & Wolverine, Feige stated that the most crucial aspect of the Blade movie’s production is making sure they create the correct movie and not rushing its release. He added that for the last two years, they have been working on the project to ensure they make the right Blade movie. The wait for the Blade reboot is set to continue as Marvel’s production team works on the film’s development
