Omar Apollo will make his acting debut in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’

Omar Apollo, the acclaimed singer, is set to make his cinematic debut in Queer, an upcoming film directed by Luca Guadagnino. The movie is an adaptation of William S. Burrough’s novel from 1985 that is semi-autobiographical. Daniel Craig, the actor famous for playing James Bond, and Drew Starkey will also perform in the film, which will debut at the Venice Film Festival in September this year.

Queer is set in Mexico City in the 1940s, with Craig performing as the lead character, battling his heroin addiction. His ego, an outcast American expat, now resides in the city. Meanwhile, Starkey plays a younger man with whom Craig’s character becomes infatuated, according to Variety, while Apollo’s role remains undisclosed.

During the Venice Film Festival press conference, the festival’s artistic director Alberto Barbera praised Craig’s unconventional portrayal in the film, calling it the “performance of his life.” You can see a first look at the movie below.

Apollo recently released his second album, God Said No. According to NME, the album is “poignant,” with the “Glow” song as a fitting conclusion to his insecurity and uncertainty exploration in love, as he ultimately finds comfort in his heritage, friends, and family despite his many achievements. Apollo has discussed earning money from his music career to finance a vacation at the Palace of Versailles, and he has previously been employed at McDonald’s to purchase a laptop and a microphone, which he used to create his first SoundCloud releases.
