The National Wax Museum Plus located in Dublin recently received criticism on social media for their Sinéad O’Connor wax figure. The statue was unveiled on July 25, meant to serve as a tribute on the one-year anniversary of the Irish singer’s death. However, the figure was met with scathing reviews online, with some suggesting it lacked the level of detail expected. Others questioned why it had been placed among sculptures of characters from Star Wars.
The museum has since announced that they will be removing the figure and will be launching a new project to “create a more accurate representation” of the singer. The museum shared a statement in regard to the public’s feedback and reaction to the figure. They “acknowledge that the current representation did not meet our high standards or the expectations of Sinéad’s devoted fans”.
With the new project launch, the museum is now committed to creating a new sculpture that will reflect O’Connor’s “true spirit and iconic image.” Paddy Dunning, the museum’s director and close personal friend of the late O’Connor, met with the team and decided that they “can do better.” The project is set to begin immediately.
O’Connor’s loss continues to be felt deeply across the music world, with Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan recently reflecting on his friendship with her. He described her as “very, very honest. I mean, almost to a fault.” Her daughter also performed an emotional cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U” in March at a tribute concert for both O’Connor and The Pogues’ Shane MacGowan
